Benzophenone-3

What Benzophenone-3 is & what it does

Oxybenzone, a broad-spectrum filter absorbing UVB and UVA. It is effective but controversial over skin absorption and reef-safety concerns, and is restricted in some areas.

What is Benzophenone-3 and what does it do in sunscreen?

Benzophenone-3, better known as oxybenzone, is a chemical UV filter. It absorbs both UVB and short UVA rays, so it is used to add broad-spectrum coverage to a sunscreen. It is one of the older filters and is often paired with others to round out protection.

Is Benzophenone-3 the same as oxybenzone?

Yes. Benzophenone-3 is the INCI name printed on the label, and oxybenzone is its common name. They are two names for the same UV filter, so a product listing either one contains the same ingredient.

Is Benzophenone-3 safe?

It is approved for use in sunscreens across the EU, the US and many other markets, though at capped concentrations. It is more controversial than newer filters because studies have shown it can be absorbed through the skin, and it is a more common contact allergen than most filters. Regulators continue to allow it within limits, but some people choose to avoid it, and that is a personal preference rather than a settled safety verdict.

Is Benzophenone-3 reef-safe?

No, it is one of the filters at the center of reef-safety concerns. Oxybenzone has been linked to coral harm in some research, and a few places such as Hawaii and Key West have restricted it in sunscreens. If reef safety matters to you, look for products that leave it out, often labelled reef-friendly.

Does Benzophenone-3 clog pores?

Generally no. It is a UV filter used in small, capped amounts rather than a heavy oil or wax, so it is not a typical pore-clogging culprit. If a sunscreen breaks you out, the richer emollients elsewhere in the formula are more likely the cause.

Is Benzophenone-3 a UVA or UVB filter?

It covers both, leaning toward UVB and shorter UVA wavelengths. That dual absorption is why it was historically valued, but it is not as photostable as some modern UVA filters, so formulators usually combine it with others for durable broad-spectrum protection.
