Benzyl Salicylate

What Benzyl Salicylate is & what it does

A mild, balsamic fragrance compound also used to help blend scents. It is a labeled fragrance allergen.

What is Benzyl Salicylate and what does it do in sunscreen?

Benzyl Salicylate is a fragrance ingredient with a mild, soft, slightly balsamic scent. In a sunscreen it forms part of the perfume and also helps blend and fix other scent notes so the fragrance lasts. It has no sun-protection function; it is there only for how the product smells.

Is Benzyl Salicylate safe?

For most people, yes, but it is a recognized fragrance allergen. EU labeling rules require it to be named on the pack so that sensitized users can identify it, rather than leaving it hidden in "parfum." At the low levels used in sunscreen it is well tolerated by the majority, while those with a known fragrance allergy may prefer to avoid it.

Is Benzyl Salicylate a sunscreen filter or a salicylic acid?

No to both. Despite the "salicylate" in its name, it is a fragrance compound, not a UV filter and not an exfoliating acid like salicylic acid. The salicylate part just describes its chemistry; in a sunscreen its only job is scent, and the UV protection comes from the dedicated filters listed separately.

Is Benzyl Salicylate a common allergen?

Yes, it is on the EU list of fragrance substances that must be declared because they can cause contact allergy in some people. Most users have no reaction, but anyone prone to fragrance sensitivity, or with eczema-prone or reactive skin, may want a fragrance-free option. A patch test is a reasonable precaution.

What is Benzyl Salicylate on an ingredient list (INCI)?

"Benzyl Salicylate" is the INCI name, listed by name toward the end of the ingredient list alongside other declared allergens such as Linalool or Benzyl Alcohol. It is called out separately because labeling rules require listed fragrance allergens to be named even when the rest of the scent appears simply as "Parfum" or "Fragrance."
