Carnosine
What Carnosine is & what it does
A peptide-like antioxidant that helps protect skin proteins from glycation and oxidative stress. It supports a smoother, more resilient appearance over time.
What is Carnosine and what does it do in sunscreen?
Carnosine is a small peptide-like molecule (a dipeptide of two amino acids) used in skincare as an antioxidant. In a sunscreen it works as a support ingredient, helping protect skin proteins from oxidative stress and glycation, the sugar-driven process that stiffens and dulls skin over time. It does not provide sun protection itself; it complements the UV filters by helping the skin look smoother and more resilient.
Is Carnosine safe?
Yes, for topical use it is considered well tolerated and low-risk at cosmetic levels. It is closely related to compounds the body already makes, it is not a known irritant or sensitiser for most people, and it appears in many leave-on products without issue. As with any active, anyone with very reactive skin can patch test first.
Does Carnosine clog pores?
Generally no. Carnosine is a water-friendly antioxidant used in very small amounts, not an oil or wax, so it is not considered comedogenic. It is an unlikely cause of breakouts; if a product congests your skin, the heavier emollients elsewhere in the formula are far more probable culprits.
Is Carnosine an antioxidant or an active anti-aging ingredient?
Both descriptions fit. Carnosine is classed as an antioxidant, and that antioxidant action, together with its ability to interfere with glycation, is exactly why it shows up in products aimed at mature or stressed skin. It supports a smoother, more even appearance over time rather than delivering an instant change, and it should not be confused with a UV filter or a preservative.
Is Carnosine vegan?
It can be either, so it depends on how it is sourced. The carnosine used in cosmetics is typically made by synthesis or fermentation rather than extracted from animals, which makes it suitable for vegan formulas, but the molecule itself also occurs naturally in animal tissue. If vegan status matters to you, check the brand's own claim for that specific product.
