Cetearyl Olivate
What Cetearyl Olivate is & what it does
An olive-derived emulsifier, usually paired with sorbitan olivate, that creates stable, conditioning emulsions resembling skin lipids. It softens and gives a pleasant, natural feel.
What is Cetearyl Olivate and what does it do in sunscreen?
It is an olive-derived emulsifier and emollient, almost always paired with sorbitan olivate. Together they blend oil and water into stable, conditioning creams whose lipids resemble those naturally in skin. In a sunscreen it softens the skin and lends a pleasant, natural feel while keeping the formula evenly mixed.
Is Cetearyl Olivate safe?
Yes. It is a mild, olive-based emulsifier that is well tolerated and works on the skin surface rather than being absorbed. Because it is gentle and skin-friendly, it is a common choice in formulas for sensitive and dry skin. At the levels used in sunscreen it is non-irritating for most people.
Does Cetearyl Olivate clog pores?
Generally no. We have no comedogenic flag on it, so it is treated as generally low risk for clogging pores. It is an emulsifying emollient used in modest amounts, not a heavy occlusive oil. As with any conditioning ingredient, very acne-prone skin can occasionally react, but it is not a notable pore-clogging flag.
Is Cetearyl Olivate fungal-acne safe?
Not strictly. It carries a fatty, olive-derived portion that the malassezia yeast behind fungal acne can feed on, so people actively managing fungal acne may prefer to avoid it. For everyone else it is harmless and simply acts as a gentle, skin-friendly emulsifier. This is one specific skin concern, not a general safety issue.
Is Cetearyl Olivate natural and vegan?
It is olive-derived, made from olive oil fatty acids and cetearyl alcohol, so its building blocks are plant-based even though the finished emulsifier is processed. Because it comes from plant sources, it is generally suitable for vegan formulas. It is a popular choice in products marketed as natural or olive-based.
