Eugenol
What Eugenol is & what it does
A clove-scented fragrance compound found in spice oils. It adds scent and is a recognized allergen that can irritate sensitive skin.
What is Eugenol and what does it do in sunscreen?
Eugenol is a clove-scented aroma compound found naturally in spice oils like clove and cinnamon. In sunscreen it is part of the fragrance, adding scent rather than doing anything for sun protection. It has no UV-filtering or skincare function on its own.
Is Eugenol safe?
For most people, yes, but it is a recognized fragrance allergen. The EU lists Eugenol among the fragrance ingredients that must be declared on the label by name precisely because some people react to it. It is generally fine for most users at the low levels used in fragrance, but it can irritate sensitive or fragrance-reactive skin.
Is Eugenol an allergen?
Yes. Eugenol is one of the named fragrance allergens that EU rules require to be listed separately on an ingredient label. If you know you react to fragrance or have had patch-test reactions, it is worth avoiding. For everyone else it is a common, well-tolerated scent component.
Does Eugenol clog pores?
Generally no. Eugenol is a volatile aroma molecule used in tiny amounts, not an oil or wax, so it is not flagged as comedogenic in our data. The concern with Eugenol is fragrance sensitivity and irritation, not clogged pores.
Is Eugenol natural or synthetic?
Both versions exist. Eugenol occurs naturally in clove, cinnamon, and other spice oils, and it is also produced synthetically to a consistent purity. Chemically the molecule is the same either way, and so is its status as a declared fragrance allergen, so "natural" does not make it gentler here.
What is Eugenol on an ingredient list (INCI)?
"Eugenol" is the INCI name printed on the label. It often appears at the end of the list alongside other named fragrance allergens such as Limonene or Linalool, because regulations require these to be called out by name. Its presence simply means the product is scented.
