Hydrogenated Lecithin
What Hydrogenated Lecithin is & what it does
A stable, hydrogenated form of lecithin used to emulsify and to build skin-friendly liposomes that carry actives. It conditions and supports the barrier.
What is Hydrogenated Lecithin and what does it do in sunscreen?
Hydrogenated Lecithin is an emulsifier made by adding hydrogen to lecithin, a phospholipid usually sourced from soy or sunflower. In a sunscreen it keeps the oil and water phases blended and helps form skin-friendly liposomes that carry other ingredients. It also conditions the surface and supports the skin barrier, so it does double duty as a texture builder and a mild skin-care agent.
Is Hydrogenated Lecithin safe?
Yes. It is a long-established cosmetic ingredient used in a wide range of skincare and makeup, and the hydrogenated form is valued for being more stable and less prone to oxidation than plain lecithin. It is well tolerated by most skin types at the levels used in sunscreen. As with any ingredient, very sensitive users should patch test a new product.
Does Hydrogenated Lecithin clog pores?
Generally no. It is not flagged as comedogenic in our data, and it is used in small amounts as an emulsifier rather than as a heavy oil or wax. If a formula is breaking you out, the richer emollients and plant oils elsewhere in the list are far more likely the cause than the lecithin.
Is Hydrogenated Lecithin fungal-acne safe?
Not entirely. Hydrogenated Lecithin sits in the plant-oil and fatty lane, and the malassezia yeast behind fungal acne can use its fatty part as food. People who are actively managing fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) may prefer to avoid it. For everyone else it is harmless, and this is one specific skin concern rather than a general safety problem.
What is Hydrogenated Lecithin on an ingredient list (INCI)?
"Hydrogenated Lecithin" is the INCI name printed on the label. It signals a hardened, more stable version of lecithin, the natural phospholipid found in soy and sunflower. You will usually see it sitting among the emulsifiers, often near glyceryl stearate or other texture ingredients.
Is Hydrogenated Lecithin natural or synthetic?
It is plant-derived but processed. The starting lecithin comes from a natural source such as soy or sunflower, then it is hydrogenated in a lab to make it more stable. So it is best described as naturally sourced and then refined, rather than purely natural or fully synthetic.
