Xanthophyll

What Xanthophyll is & what it does

Xanthophyll is a yellow, oxygen-containing carotenoid pigment found naturally in plants, flowers, and some algae, with lutein and zeaxanthin being well-known examples. In skincare and sunscreen products it is used chiefly as a colorant and as an antioxidant that can help counter free radicals. As a member of the carotenoid family, it is fat-soluble and lends a warm yellow tint to formulations.

Is Xanthophyll safe?

Xanthophyll is a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment found in many foods and plants, and it is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics at the levels typically used. It is most often present as a colorant or antioxidant. As with any ingredient, patch testing is wise if your skin is easily irritated.

What does Xanthophyll do in skincare?

Xanthophyll serves mainly as a natural yellow colorant and as an antioxidant that can help neutralize free radicals on the skin. In sunscreens it may be included to support the formula's antioxidant profile. It is a supporting ingredient rather than a primary UV filter.

Is Xanthophyll vegan?

Xanthophyll itself is a plant- and algae-derived pigment, so the molecule is not inherently animal-based. Whether a specific product is vegan depends on the sourcing and the rest of the formula. Checking the brand's vegan certification is the most reliable way to confirm.
