It's the texture written into the ingredient list. A handful of specific ingredients add real, felt mass to a formula, and once you can spot them you can predict how heavy something will wear before you ever open the cap. What actually makes a sunscreen feel heavy

Heaviness comes from mass you can feel. A sunscreen is a film you leave on your skin, and the more that film is made of dense, non-volatile stuff, solid particles, wax, butter, thick oil, the more you'll notice it sitting there. Lightweight formulas are mostly water and volatile carriers that flash off in seconds; heavy ones are packed with ingredients that stay put all day.

The biggest single driver is the mineral load. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are solid powders, and at the 10–25% you need for real SPF they're paste by physics, so we rate them on how much is in the bottle, with no discount for "nano" or "micronised", because felt mass is mass. Stack a wax skeleton (every stick and balm has one), butters, heavy plant oils and rich fatty thickeners on top, and you get the dense, occlusive end of the catalog. Volatile alcohol and silicones can lighten the wear, but only the part that actually evaporates.

One important caveat before we start: heavy-feel is a prediction from composition, not a guarantee. Texture also depends on how much you apply, a thin layer of a rich cream can feel fine, a thick layer of a light gel can feel like a lot. So we rate it as a propensity: a low score means "likely to feel like a dense layer", not "will feel heavy on everyone". This is a RISK-style axis, so every sunscreen starts at a clean 100 and loses points for the ingredients below, the more of an ingredient is in the bottle (the earlier it sits in the list), the bigger the penalty. Mineral filters: the main source of weight

This is the first place to look, and for most heavy sunscreens it's most of the answer. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are solid mineral powders suspended in the formula, and unlike the dissolved chemical filters they have real, felt mass. To hit a genuine SPF 30–50 you need a lot of them, often 10–25% zinc, and that much powder simply feels like something on the skin.

We rate the mineral load on the best plausible declared percentage where we can read one, and on position otherwise, and crucially we give no nano discount. A finely-milled zinc still weighs what it weighs. When both minerals sit right at the top of the list we add a small extra penalty, because a dual-mineral paste is denser than either alone. This is why thick, high-zinc mineral creams and "sensitive" formulas dominate the heavy end, while chemical-filter sunscreens (which dissolve into the formula and add almost no mass) can feel like nothing.

Waxes and butters: the stick skeleton

Waxes are what make a stick a stick. Beeswax (Cera Alba), candelilla, carnauba (Copernicia Cerifera), ozokerite, paraffin and polyethylene give a balm its solid structure, and that structure doesn't melt away on your skin, it smooths into a thick, occlusive film. Heavy plant and mineral oils

Not all oils are heavy, but a specific set reliably is. Coconut oil, castor oil (Ricinus Communis), mineral oil (Paraffinum Liquidum) and the synthetic emollients Hydrogenated Polyisobutene and Hydrogenated Polydecene are thick, slow-spreading and slow to absorb, they leave a lingering, slightly greasy film rather than sinking in. Petrolatum: the pure occlusive

Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is the heaviest single emollient in common use, a true occlusive that forms a thick, sealing barrier and doesn't absorb at all. That's a feature for chapped lips and a liability for a face you want to feel bare. It carries the largest emollient penalty in our scoring, and the penalty scales steeply with position: petrolatum at the very top of the list means the formula is built around it.

Fatty thickeners and silicone film-formers

Two quieter contributors round out the dense end. Fatty alcohols, cetearyl, cetyl, stearyl and behenyl alcohol, plus stearic acid are the waxy thickeners that give a lotion its rich, creamy body; near the top of the list they signal a thick, cushiony emulsion rather than a fluid. We count the heaviest couple of them when they sit in the first seven ingredients.

Separately, a short list of true silicone structurants, Trimethylsiloxysilicate and the C30-45 alkyl methicones, form durable, water-resistant films that add to the felt layer. We're deliberately narrow here: the elastomer crosspolymers in every "velvet" gel are not on this list, because they make formulas feel lighter, not heavier. Only the genuine film-formers count.

When minerals are suspended in a dense matrix

The factors above don't just add up, in the worst case they multiply. When a heavy mineral load sits in a dense wax, butter or petrolatum base, the result is denser than the sum of its parts: the powder is locked into a film that already wants to stay put. We add a synergy penalty for this combination, with a stronger tier when both the mineral and the dense emollient sit right at the top of the list.

There's a second rule that goes with it. Because a system like this is genuinely dense, we put a floor under it: volatile carriers can lighten the spread, but they can't refund a mineral-plus-wax load below the "noticeably heavy" band, because the volatiles evaporate and the mineral and wax stay behind. It's the signature of the thick mineral sticks and balms that fill the bottom of our scale.

Stick and balm formats are heavy by design

Format itself is a signal. A product that calls itself a stick or balm and is built on a solid wax-or-butter skeleton gets a dedicated penalty, because the whole point of the format is a thick, swipe-on layer that resists sweat and water. That's not a flaw, sticks are brilliant for noses, ears, scalps and reapplication over makeup, but they are heavy by design and we rate them that way.

Note the rule is specific: the name has to say stick or balm and the formula has to actually have the solid skeleton. A "stick" that's secretly a light gel wouldn't trigger it. In practice almost every mineral stick does, which is why this factor shows up alongside the wax, butter and synergy penalties on the same products.

What lightens it: volatile carriers that flash off

Some ingredients are engineered to disappear, and they genuinely lighten the wear, so they earn points back. Volatile alcohol (Alcohol Denat.), volatile silicones (cyclopentasiloxane and friends) and volatile hydrocarbons (isododecane, isohexadecane) all evaporate within seconds of application. While they're there they thin the formula and improve spread; once they've flashed off, only the heavier residue is left on your skin.

This is how a fast-drying "dry-touch" lotion can feel weightless despite carrying real filters. How to find a sunscreen that doesn't feel like a mask

If you want weightless, match the format to the goal. For everyday face wear, oily skin and hot weather, the lightest things in the catalog are watery gels, fluids, essences and "aqua" lotions, usually built on modern chemical filters with little or no mineral load, so there's almost no felt mass. Korean and Japanese sunscreens and the European fluids lead here; many score a perfect, weightless 100. If you like a light chemical-filter lotion, look for an alcohol or volatile-silicone carrier near the top of the list, that's the fast-drying, dry-touch finish.

If you specifically want or need mineral, accept that some weight comes with the territory and minimise it: choose a fluid or milk over a thick cream, look for a moderate declared zinc percentage rather than the maximum, and skip the stick for large areas. And don't write sticks off, they're heavy on purpose and that's exactly what makes them the best tool for noses, ears, hairlines and topping up over makeup.
