Some sunscreen bases behave like a primer: they set, grip, and give powder something to hold onto. Others stay wet, greasy or gel-like, and makeup never stands a chance on top. What actually makes makeup pill, slide or grey

"Pilling" is the headline complaint, but three different failure modes hide under it, and they have different causes. The first is true pilling: the sunscreen's film and your foundation refuse to bond, so when the brush or sponge drags across them they ball up into tiny rolls. The second is sliding, a greasy, never-quite-dry base that lets foundation travel and break apart through the day. The third is greying, where a heavy mineral layer goes ashy and your foundation looks dull and grey on top of it.

What stops all three is, broadly, primer-like chemistry. A base that sets quickly, leaves a dry silicone or powder finish, and grips rather than slips gives makeup a stable canvas, which is exactly what a face primer is engineered to do. So this axis rewards the ingredients that make a sunscreen behave like a primer and penalises the ones that make it behave like a serum, a balm, or a thick mineral paste.

This is where our scoring deliberately flips on two ingredients. On our moisture and heavy-feel axes, dimethicone earns no points or a penalty, but the question there is how the sunscreen feels on bare skin, not how foundation wears on top. Under makeup, that same silicone slip is exactly what you want, so here it's a plus. Quick-set alcohol: dry surface, no slide

A formula with alcohol near the top flashes off in seconds and leaves a dry, matte surface. Soft-focus powders and dry esters: grip and finish

A little powder high in the formula, Silica, or a soft-focus blurring powder, mattifies the surface and gives foundation something to key into, much like a setting powder works in reverse. Powder overload meeting a film-former: pilling squared

Raises risk

A little powder is a plus, as we said, but a powder overload on top of a gel or film-former is the worst pilling pattern of all, and it's worse than either piece alone. When a formula is packed with powders (several high in the list, or a mineral filter right at the top) and carries a classic gel or a long-wear film-former up front, the loose powder and the polymer film shear against each other under your brush. The result rolls off in visible flecks.

Greasy occlusives, butters and waxes: the slide

Raises risk

The second failure mode is sliding, and it comes from a base that never really dries. Heavy occlusives, Petrolatum and mineral oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), lanolin, rich plant butters and waxes, and the silicone-wax structurants that hold sticks together, leave a permanently tacky, oily film. Foundation laid over that has nothing to set against, so it moves, separates and slides through the day, and powder just sinks in and disappears.

This is why thick mineral creams, balms and especially sunscreen sticks are such poor makeup bases: they're built almost entirely from waxes and occlusives. Light "slippy" esters like Isopropyl Myristate get a smaller penalty in the same spirit, they keep foundation mobile rather than letting it set. We weight all of these by amount and cap the total.

High glycerin: the tacky base

Raises risk

Glycerin is in almost every sunscreen and at normal levels it's fine. But when it sits very high in the list, position two or three, it makes the base feel syrupy and stays slightly tacky on the skin, never setting to a dry touch. Foundation grabs unevenly on a tacky surface, which reads as patchiness and early breakup. A few other humectant syrups (honey, sorbitol) add to the effect.

We keep this penalty modest, and we deliberately halve it when the formula also has quick-set alcohol, elastomers or powders, because those dry, primer-like elements counteract the stickiness, a glowy fluid can carry a fair bit of glycerin and still set acceptably if the rest of the chemistry pulls the other way. It's the bare, glycerin-led humectant lotions with nothing to offset them that feel tackiest under makeup.

Heavy mineral filters: greying under foundation

Raises risk

The third failure mode is greying. A heavy load of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide right at the top of the list leaves a slightly opaque, light-scattering cast on the skin, the same white-cast chemistry our ghost axis tracks. Foundation over that cast can look ashy, dull or grey, especially on deeper skin tones, because you're now layering pigment over an already-reflective white-ish base.

This is a milder echo of full white cast, a modest penalty, not a wipeout, and we soften it in the two cases that genuinely grey less: tinted mineral formulas (the iron oxides correct the colour) and all-nano mineral formulas (finer particles scatter less). A thick, untinted, non-nano mineral paste is the worst case; a tinted mineral fluid is far more wearable.

How to stop your makeup pilling over sunscreen

Most of the time, pilling is fixable without changing products at all, technique does half the work. Apply your sunscreen in thin layers and, above all, let it dry fully: give it two or three minutes (longer for a richer formula) so the film sets before anything goes on top. Then pat or press your foundation in with a sponge or fingers rather than dragging a brush back and forth, the rubbing motion is what actually shears the layers into pills. Letting each layer set before the next, and not over-applying, prevents the great majority of real-world pilling.
