Best High-Protection Sunscreens with Real UVA Coverage, Rated

A high-protection sunscreen does more than post a big SPF number: it needs real broad-spectrum coverage, including the long-UVA (UVA1) wavelengths that drive aging and deeper damage. We read the actual filter list of every sunscreen in our catalog, reward genuine UVA1 protection, and rank the strongest formulas below.

What high protection actually means

SPF only measures sunburn from UVB. True high protection depends on the UVA side, and especially UVA1, the long wavelengths that penetrate deepest. Our protection score reads the filter list and rewards filters with real long-UVA coverage, rather than trusting the headline number on the label.

Filter choice is the trade-off. Some regions lack access to the newest broad-spectrum filters, so a formula can post a high SPF while leaving a gap in the long-UVA range. The score flags that gap so you can compare like for like.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher SPF mean better UVA protection?

Not necessarily. SPF rates UVB only, so a high SPF can still have weak long-UVA coverage. Our score reads the filter list to check the UVA1 range directly.

What is UVA1 and why does it matter?

UVA1 is the longest band of ultraviolet light. It reaches deep into the skin and drives aging and pigment changes, so we reward filters that genuinely cover it.
