What gives a sunscreen a matte finish

A matte finish comes from sebum-absorbing powders, volatile carriers that flash off, and a low-oil base. Our finish score reads those signals from the formula rather than trusting the label, and places each product on a matte-to-dewy scale.

Matte is a preference, not a quality. If your skin is dry, a matte formula can feel tight, and a Dewy or Hydrating one will sit better. For oily skin, pair Matte with Non-comedogenic for the lowest-shine, lowest-clog option.

Frequently asked questions

Are matte sunscreens good for oily skin?

Usually, yes. A matte finish controls the shine that oily skin produces through the day and gives makeup a more stable base. If you also break out, combine the Matte and Non-comedogenic filters.

Will a matte sunscreen look dry on my skin?

On oily skin, no. On dry or mature skin a strongly matte formula can emphasize texture, so if that is you, a balanced or dewy finish is more flattering. Our finish score tells you how far toward matte each one sits.
