Why sunscreen stains your shirts and collars yellow, and how to pick one that won't

If your white tees come out of the wash with rusty orange-yellow blotches under the arms, or your collars yellow over a season, it usually isn't sweat and it isn't your detergent, it's your sunscreen. One UV filter in particular reacts with the iron in hard tap water to form a rust-colored stain that's often invisible going on and only blooms after you wash the garment. What actually stains your clothes

The villain of the story is avobenzone, the most common UVA filter in the Western market. On its own it's colorless. But avobenzone is a champion chelator, it grabs onto metal ions, and the iron (Fe³⁺) dissolved in hard tap water is exactly the kind of ion it loves. When the two meet in your washing machine, they lock together into a rust-yellow complex that behaves like a dye. That is the classic yellow armpit and the orange blotch that appears only after laundering.

This is why the stain is so confusing. The sunscreen goes on clear, you wear it, you wash the shirt as normal, and the stain develops in the wash, set permanently by the iron in the water. Worse, chlorine bleach makes it darker, not lighter, because bleach drives the same iron-oxidation reaction. The harder your water (and the more iron in it), the worse the problem, which is why the same sunscreen can wreck shirts in one city and behave in another.

A few other ingredients pile on. Oxybenzone yellows fabric in its own right; octocrylene rides along with avobenzone and makes the oily stain cling harder; and tinted formulas carry iron-oxide pigments that rub off onto collars. One important caveat before we start: this risk is conditional on your water. So we rate it as a risk, never a guarantee, every sunscreen starts at a clean 100 and loses points for the ingredients below, and the earlier an ingredient sits in the list (i.e. the more of it is in the bottle), the bigger the penalty.

Avobenzone: the rust-stainer

If your sunscreen leaves rust-orange stains, this is almost always why. Avobenzone (you'll see it on the label as Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) is the single biggest driver in our scoring, because it doesn't just deposit on fabric, it chemically bonds iron from your wash water into a colored, dye-like complex that ordinary detergent won't lift. It sits in roughly four out of ten sunscreens on the US market, which is why this stain is so common.

Position matters: avobenzone near the top of the ingredient list means there's far more of it in the bottle, so we weight it on a sliding scale and penalise a top-of-list avobenzone hardest. The classic offenders are chemical "sport" lotions and sprays, where avobenzone leads the active list. Note the difference below, a lotion with avobenzone at position 1 is a heavier risk than a tinted fluid where it's buried further down.

Oxybenzone: the yellow-stainer

Raises risk

Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) is the other notorious clothes-yellower, and a familiar one, it's the filter that's been phased out of many reef-safe formulas, but it's still all over older drugstore lotions, sticks and sprays. It yellows white and light fabric directly, independent of the iron reaction, so it earns its own penalty on top of any avobenzone in the same formula.

You'll most often find it stacked with avobenzone in legacy broad-spectrum sunscreens, which is the worst case for a white shirt: the rust complex and the yellowing reinforce each other. If a label lists both, treat it as a fabric hazard.

Octocrylene and the avobenzone pair

Octocrylene rarely travels alone. It's the stabiliser that's added specifically to keep avobenzone from breaking down in sunlight, so the two appear together in almost every chemical Western sunscreen. On its own octocrylene is a smaller, oily co-stainer, it doesn't dye fabric, but it makes the greasy film stickier and helps the avobenzone stain anchor itself into the weave.

Because the duo is so reliably worse than either filter alone, we add a dedicated penalty whenever avobenzone and octocrylene appear together, on top of their individual scores. It's the chemical signature of the sport-lotion stain: avobenzone supplies the rust, octocrylene makes sure it sticks. You'll see this pairing flagged in every product in the first section above.

Tinted formulas: iron-oxide pigment transfer

Tinted sunscreens, BB creams and "glow" SPF get their color from iron oxides (you'll see them as CI 77491 / 77492 / 77499, or just Iron Oxides). These are the same pigments used in foundation, and they do exactly what foundation does to a white collar: rub off and leave a beige, orange or brown smudge. We add a flat penalty for any iron-oxide pigment in the formula.

The good news, and the reason this is a different story from avobenzone, is that pigment transfer is a surface mark, not a chemical reaction. It's washable with prompt pre-treatment, it hasn't bonded to the fibre the way the rust complex has. So a tinted mineral sunscreen can still mark your collar, but that mark will generally come out, whereas the avobenzone rust stain is the one that sets for good.

White mineral residue: worst on dark fabric

Mineral filters, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, flip the problem around. They don't react with iron and they don't yellow whites; instead they leave a chalky white or greasy residue that's invisible on a white tee but shows up plainly on a black or navy shirt. We rate this on a sliding scale by position, with a small extra penalty when both minerals are present, and it's deliberately a much lighter penalty than the chemical stains.

That's because mineral residue is the easy kind of mark: it sits on the surface and washes out with no drama and no permanent damage. It's a real annoyance on dark gym clothes, but it will never set into the rust stain that ruins a white shirt. So a pure-mineral sunscreen lands far down our risk scale, the residue is the price you pay for a formula that keeps your whites completely clean.

What keeps your whites clean: avobenzone-free formulas

Lowers risk

The reliable fix for permanent stains is to avoid the rust reaction entirely, and there are two clean routes. The first is pure mineral, untinted: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with no avobenzone, no oxybenzone and no iron-oxide color. There's nothing to chelate iron and nothing to dye the fabric, so these score a clean low risk for whites, their only mark is washable residue on darks.

The second route is the modern filters common in Asian and European sunscreens, Tinosorb M and S, Uvinul, the Mexoryls. How to stop sunscreen staining your clothes

If a sunscreen has already stained your shirts, the laundry rules are counter-intuitive. Never use chlorine bleach on a sunscreen stain, it drives the iron reaction and sets the stain darker. Instead, treat rust-yellow marks with an oxalic-acid rust remover or a dedicated rust stain product, pre-treat before the stain has gone through a hot wash, and air-dry rather than tumble-dry until you're sure it's gone, since heat also sets it. Iron-oxide pigment smudges from tinted formulas come out far more easily with a normal pre-treat-and-wash.

Prevention is simpler than removal. For anything you care about, white shirts, good collars, pale gym kit, reach for an avobenzone-free formula: a pure untinted mineral, or a modern-filter (Tinosorb) sunscreen. Whatever you wear, let it dry fully before you dress, since a wet film transfers far more readily than a set one, and wash exposed garments promptly rather than letting the residue age in the hamper. And keep the caveat in mind: this is a risk that depends on the iron in your water. If your sunscreen has never marked your clothes, your water is probably soft enough that you can keep using it.
