Matte vs dewy sunscreen: what gives a formula its finish

"Finish" is one of the RateMySPF scores where there's no winner and no loser. It's a position, not a risk: we measure the surface sheen a formula leaves on skin and place every sunscreen somewhere between matte on the left, flat, shine-free, no gloss, and dewy on the right, glowy, light-reflecting, lit-from-within. Where it lands isn't good or bad; it's a match. Oily and shine-prone skin usually wants matte; anyone chasing the "glass-skin" glow wants dewy; most formulas sit comfortably in the middle. So as you read on, don't think "high score = better." Think "which finish do I want?" And keep one thing straight: finish is not the same as weight or hydration. How heavy a product feels is our Heavy feel score; how much moisture it adds is Moisture. Finish is only about how the surface looks once the product has set, and a light formula can be matte OR dewy. We read the full ingredient list of every sunscreen we catalog, weigh what pulls toward each pole, and below we'll show you exactly what drives that, with real products at both ends.

We rate the sheen the ingredients leave, not the marketing

"Matte" and "dewy" are everywhere on sunscreen labels, but the words are marketing as often as they're measurement. Here we ignore the claim and read the ingredient list, because the finish is really decided by a small set of ingredients pulling in two directions: some leave a dry, light-scattering surface, and some leave an oily, light-reflecting one. We weigh those two forces against each other and report where the balance settles.

It helps to be clear about what this score is not. It is not about weight, how thick, heavy or slick a product sits on skin. That's a real thing, but we measure it on a separate axis, Heavy feel. And it is not about hydration, how much moisture a formula adds, which is our Moisture score. Finish is its own question: surface sheen. The three often disagree. A featherlight gel can dry matte or glowy; a genuinely hydrating formula can still read flat and shine-free. So a sunscreen can be light AND matte, light AND dewy, hydrating AND matte, finish is independent enough to be worth its own scale.

The maths is deliberately simple. Every sunscreen starts dead-centre at a neutral middle. Matte ingredients, oil-absorbing powders, fast-evaporating carriers and volatile alcohol, push the score down toward the flat end. Dewy ingredients, surface oils, glossy esters and occlusives, push it up toward the glowy end. The final number is just where that tug-of-war settles, and the earlier an ingredient sits in the list (the more of it is in the bottle), the harder it pulls.

One thing to keep straight as you read the sections below: we render every Finish factor in a neutral grey, on purpose. There's no red "bad" and no green "good" here, matte and dewy are simply the two ends of one spectrum. A matte factor is exactly what oily skin is shopping for; a dewy factor is what the glow-chasers want. Three labels sit along the scale: matte (0–43), balanced (44–57, the default middle) and dewy (58–100). One last honesty note: ordinary, non-volatile dimethicone, the silicone in a huge share of sunscreens, is deliberately left unscored in this version, because its satin-to-blur effect sits ambiguously between the poles and the label never tells us which.

What makes a sunscreen matte: oil-absorbing powders

The clearest pull toward matte isn't a liquid at all, it's powder. Silica and its silylated cousins, clays like kaolin and bentonite, plant starches (tapioca, corn, rice), the spherical polymers (nylon, PMMA, lauroyl lysine) and old-school talc and perlite all do the same two jobs: they soak up sebum and scatter light, so the surface reads flat and shine-free instead of glossy. We add up everything from this family, weight each by where it sits in the list, and cap the total so a powder-heavy formula can't run away with the score.

These powders are the backbone of mattifying primers, oil-control fluids and setting powders, the formats built to keep midday shine down. If a flat, no-gloss finish is what you're after, a long powder list high in the ingredients is the signal to chase. (Note the overlap with other scores: the same powders also nudge a formula toward the light end of Moisture. That's expected, one ingredient can shape both feel and finish, but here we read it only for sheen.)

Flash-off carriers and volatile alcohol

Two more ingredients reinforce the matte end by vanishing. First, volatile carriers, fast-evaporating silicones like cyclopentasiloxane and cyclomethicone, and light hydrocarbons like isododecane and isohexadecane. They give a silky slip on application, then flash off the skin in seconds, leaving a dry, powdery touch and no residual shine. We tally them together under one capped contribution so a formula built on several can't be double-counted.

Second, volatile alcohol, listed as Alcohol Denat. or simply Alcohol. It evaporates fast and shine-free, which is why it anchors so many watery gels and oil-control fluids, and it pulls the finish toward flat. We weight it hardest near the top of the list, where there's enough of it to set the character of the whole formula; a trace far down the list barely registers. Together with the powders, these are the engine of the classic matte sunscreen.

What makes it dewy: surface oils, esters and butters

Now the other pole. Where powders and volatiles dry the surface, surface oils, emollient esters and butters leave a thin film that reflects light, the literal source of a "glow." We count the glossy esters (isopropyl myristate and isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyl palmitate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, coco-caprylate), the light plant oils and squalane, and the common UV-filter solvent caprylic/capric triglyceride, each adds a push toward dewy, totted up under a cap, and the higher and more numerous they are, the glowier the finish.

These are the signature of dewy-finish lotions, glow drops, tanning oils and "luminous" sunscreens. If a lit-from-within look is the goal, oils and esters high in the list are exactly what you want to see. (As with the matte powders, several of these also count toward the hydrating end of Moisture, same ingredients, different question. Finish only reads them for the sheen they leave.)

Occlusives: the heaviest gloss

At the far dewy end sit the occlusives, petrolatum, mineral oil, castor oil and lanolin. They form a continuous film that physically seals the skin, and that film is wet-looking and high-gloss, so they push the finish hard toward dewy. They're the backbone of balms, sticks and tanning oils, and they read as the shiniest formats in the catalog. We weight them by position and cap the total, the same way as the lighter oils.

Worth repeating the line that runs through this whole guide: occlusives also drive the Heavy feel score, because sealing the skin is exactly what makes a product feel thick and slick. Heavy feel asks "how heavy?"; Finish asks "how shiny?" The same petrolatum answers both, heavy and glossy, but they're genuinely different questions, which is why they're scored on separate scales.

What we deliberately leave out: dimethicone

Neutral

One very common ingredient is intentionally not scored here, and it's worth knowing why. Non-volatile dimethicone and the other ordinary silicones are in a huge share of sunscreens and clearly shape the finish, but in a way the label can't tell us. Depending on its grade and viscosity, the same "Dimethicone" can dry to a soft, blurred satin (closer to matte) or a smooth, reflective glossy sheen (closer to dewy), and an INCI list never reveals which.

Because dimethicone sits ambiguously between the two poles, scoring it would add noise rather than signal, it could wrongly tip a formula either way. So in this version we leave it out entirely and weigh only the ingredients whose finish direction we can read with confidence: the drying powders, volatiles and alcohol on one side, the light-reflecting oils, esters and occlusives on the other. A future refinement may split satin from glossy; for now, honesty wins over a guess.

How to use this score for the finish you want

Start from the look you're after, not the number. If you want a flat, no-shine result, most oily, combination and shine-prone skin does, and so does anyone wearing sunscreen under makeup that they don't want sliding around, aim at the matte end and the lower half of balanced. The signals are oil-absorbing powders (silica, starches, clays), fast-evaporating carriers and alcohol high in the ingredient list. If you want a glowy, lit-from-within dewy finish, head the other way: surface oils, glossy esters (isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyl palmitate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate) and, at the far end, the occlusives in balms and tanning oils. If you're not fussed either way, the broad balanced middle is the safe default, it's the largest band by design.

Three honest caveats. First, finish is about how the surface looks, not how the product feels or how much it hydrates, pair this scale with our Heavy feel and Moisture scores if those matter to you, because a matte sunscreen can still be hydrating and a dewy one can still feel light. Second, you can nudge any finish at application: a setting powder over a dewy formula tones the shine down, a drop of facial oil warms a matte one up. Third, remember dimethicone is unscored, a silicone-heavy formula may read a touch more satin in real life than its powders-and-oils tally alone suggests. There's no right answer on this axis, just the finish you're going for.

That's exactly why we rate finish on its own scale.

What's the best sunscreen finish for oily skin?

Most oily and shine-prone skin is happiest at the matte end: formulas led by oil-absorbing powders, fast-evaporating carriers or alcohol high in the list. These dry to a flat, shine-free surface that holds up better through the day. A 'matte' score here is a match for your skin, not a flaw in the product.

Why doesn't the Finish score count dimethicone?

Because the ingredient list doesn't tell us enough about it. Non-volatile dimethicone can dry to a soft satin (closer to matte) or a smooth glossy sheen (closer to dewy) depending on its grade and viscosity, which INCI never reveals. Since it sits ambiguously between the poles, we leave it unscored rather than guess and add noise.

Which sunscreens sit in the 'balanced' middle?

Most of the catalog, by design, it's the largest band. These are formulas where matte and dewy ingredients roughly cancel out, or where neither pole is strongly present, so the surface reads as a natural, neither-flat-nor-glowy finish. Balanced is the sensible default if you don't have a strong preference either way.
