Light vs hydrating sunscreen: how much moisture a formula actually adds
"Moisture" is the one score on RateMySPF where there's no winner and no loser. It's a position, not a risk: we measure how much beneficial hydration a formula adds, and place every sunscreen somewhere between light on the left and nourishing on the right. Where it lands isn't good or bad, it's a match. Oily skin is happiest at the light end; dry skin wants the nourishing end; most people sit comfortably in the broad middle. So as you read on, don't think "high score = better." Think "how much moisture does my skin want?" One thing this score is not: it isn't about how heavy or greasy a sunscreen feels, that weight is a separate thing we measure as Heavy feel. Here we count only the ingredients that genuinely hydrate. We read the full ingredient list of every sunscreen we catalog and work out how much water-binding and nourishing power it carries, then below we'll show you exactly what drives that, with real products across the range.

We rate the hydration the ingredients add, not the marketing
Most "matte" and "dewy" labels describe how a sunscreen looks on skin, its optical finish. That's useful, but it's not what we measure here, because finish and feel can disagree. A formula can dry to a flat, shine-free finish and still be genuinely hydrating underneath; another can look glowy yet add almost no real moisture. So instead of trusting the optics, we read the ingredient list and weigh two opposing forces against each other: how much beneficial hydration the formula draws in and holds, versus how much it works to feel light and oil-free.
It helps to be clear about what this score is not. It is not about weight or greasiness, how thick, heavy or slick a sunscreen sits on skin. That's a real thing, but we measure it on a separate axis, Heavy feel. So the rich, occluding ingredients that make a balm feel like a balm, petrolatum, lanolin, waxes, plant butters, are deliberately not counted as moisture here; they add weight, not hydration, and they belong to that other guide. On this axis we count only the ingredients that genuinely water-bind or nourish the skin.
The maths is deliberately simple. Every sunscreen starts dead-centre at a neutral middle. Hydrating ingredients, humectants that pull in water, plus light nourishing and barrier lipids, push the score up toward nourishing. Light-feel ingredients, volatile alcohol, oil-absorbing powders, fast-evaporating carriers, push it down toward light. The final number is just where that tug-of-war settles, and the earlier an ingredient sits in the list (the more of it is in the bottle), the harder it pulls.
One thing to keep straight as you read the colours below. We render hydrating factors in green and light-feel ones in red purely so the two poles are easy to tell apart at a glance, here, red and green are just the two ends of the spectrum, not "bad" and "good". A red light-feel factor is exactly what oily skin is shopping for; a green hydrating one is what dry skin needs. Four labels sit along the scale: light (0–43), balanced (44–55, the default middle), hydrating (56–67) and nourishing (68–100). Take Biore's UV Aqua Rich Glowy Moisturizer: it carries alcohol fairly high and a touch of silica, but glycerin and hyaluronate pull back the other way, and it settles squarely in the balanced band despite the light-feel notes. That cancelling-out is the whole point of the score.

Alcohol, listed as Alcohol Denat. or simply Alcohol, is the single biggest pull toward the light end, and it's the mirror image of glycerin on the hydrating side. It flashes off the skin in seconds, taking surface water with it and leaving that weightless, shine-free, "my-skin-but-drier" feel. That's precisely why it anchors so many Asian watery gels and oil-control fluids, and precisely why oily and acne-prone skin often loves it.
We weight it hardest when it sits near the top of the list, because that's when there's enough of it to set the character of the whole formula. A trace far down the list barely registers; alcohol at position 1 or 2 defines the product. To be completely clear, a big pull toward light here is not a mark against the sunscreen, it's the signal that says "this one adds little moisture, which is what oily skin wants." If that's you, this is the factor to chase, not avoid.

The other classic light-feel agent isn't a liquid at all, it's powder. Silica and its silylated cousins, clays like kaolin and bentonite, plant starches (tapioca, corn, rice), the spherical polymers (nylon, PMMA, lauroyl lysine) and old-school talc and perlite all do one job: soak up sebum and scatter light so skin reads matte rather than shiny. We add up everything from this family, weighting each by where it sits, and cap the total so a powder-heavy formula can't run away with the score.
These are the backbone of mattifying primers, oil-control fluids and setting powders, all light-feel formats. Again, this is a feature for the people who want it: a long powder list is the formula working to keep midday shine down. It's only a downside if your skin is already dry, in which case the same powders can feel tight or chalky, which is exactly why the score steers dry skin elsewhere.

Two smaller nudges round out the light-feel pole. First, volatile carriers, fast-evaporating silicones like cyclopentasiloxane and light hydrocarbons like isododecane and isohexadecane. They give a silky slip on application, then vanish, leaving a dry, powdery touch behind. We tally them together under one capped penalty so a formula built on several can't be double-counted.
Second, the mineral UV filters zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have a mild oil-absorbing, light-feel habit of their own, but only when there's enough of them to matter, so we only nudge the score when they sit right at the top of the list, zinc more than titanium. (There's also a small astringent note for witch hazel and zinc PCA high in the list, the toner-like ingredients that tighten and degrease; it's rare and gently weighted.) None of these is a fault, they're just more of the machinery that gives a sunscreen its matte, weightless character.

Now the other pole. Glycerin is to the hydrating end what alcohol is to the light end, the single biggest pull, and the most common humectant in skincare. It's a magnet for water, drawing moisture into the upper skin and holding it there, which is what gives a formula that plump, cushioned, dewy feel. High up the list it moves the score a long way toward nourishing; we weight it by position just like alcohol.
Riding alongside it is hyaluronic acid (and its salt sodium hyaluronate), the famous water-binding humectant. We count it once, at its best position, and trimmed its tail weight on purpose, buried far down a list it's often there more for the label than the skin. Together, glycerin and HA are the signature of a sunscreen built for comfort: if your skin runs dry, these two near the top are exactly what you're looking for.

Beyond the two anchors sits a deeper bench of water-binders. The strong humectants, panthenol, betaine, the PCA salts, urea, trehalose, plus modern label favourites like glyceryl glucoside, beta-glucan and polyglutamic acid, each pull moisture in their own right, and we add them up under a shared cap. The lighter polyols (propanediol, butylene glycol, pentylene glycol) are mild humectants and solvents that contribute a gentle nudge in the same direction.
On their own these rarely push a sunscreen all the way to nourishing, but they reliably keep a formula in friendly, hydrating territory, the everyday-comfortable middle that suits normal and combination skin. They're the quiet reason a lot of well-formulated Korean and European sunscreens feel so easy to wear.

Where humectants pull water in, emollients add softness and slip by filling the gaps between skin cells. Here we count the light, skin-softening lipids, emollient esters like cetyl ethylhexanoate, squalane, and the fatty alcohols (cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl alcohol) that thicken a cream and leave a soft, conditioned afterfeel. They each add a modest push toward nourishing, totted up under a cap, and the higher and more numerous they are, the further the formula sits toward the hydrating end.
Note the deliberate limit. We rate these as moisture-adding, not as weight. One common ingredient, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, is treated even more lightly because it's mostly there as a UV-filter solvent and a slip agent, not a real nourishing lipid. The genuinely heavy, occluding fats, petrolatum, lanolin, butters, waxes, are a different story entirely, and we cover why they don't count here in the next section.

There's one more group on the hydrating side worth a small, deliberate bonus: the barrier lipids. Ceramides help repair the skin's own moisture seal, and we add a little extra when their classic partners cholesterol or phytosphingosine appear alongside, the combination that defines CeraVe's whole hydrating range. These don't drown skin in oil; they rebuild the structure that keeps water in, which is why they read as genuine, skin-friendly hydration rather than heaviness.
This is the comforting, dry-skin-and-winter end of the scale, and for parched skin it's exactly right, simply more moisture than oily skin would want. Important: what you will not find rewarded here are the heavy occlusives and waxes, petrolatum, lanolin, mineral oil, beeswax, plant butters. They seal the skin, but they add weight, not hydration, so on this axis we don't count them at all; the next section explains why.

The biggest deliberate exclusion on this axis is the family of heavy occlusives and waxes, petrolatum, lanolin, mineral oil, beeswax, carnauba, candelilla, and the rich plant butters (shea, cocoa, mango). They form a film that physically seals the skin, and they're the backbone of every SPF lip balm, stick and ointment. It's tempting to call that "nourishing", but sealing water in is not the same as adding water, and the dominant thing these ingredients change is how heavy and slick the product feels.
So we measure that on a separate axis, Heavy feel, and keep it out of this score entirely. The payoff is that Moisture stays honest about genuine hydration: a wax-and-butter lip balm doesn't get to masquerade as a deeply hydrating face sunscreen just because it's greasy. If you want to know how thick or occlusive a formula sits on skin, that's the Heavy feel guide; if you want to know how much water-binding power it carries, you're in the right place.
● What we deliberately leave out: dimethicone and botanicals
Neutral
Two big categories are intentionally not scored on this axis, and it's worth knowing why. Dimethicone and the other non-volatile silicones are everywhere in sunscreen and hugely affect feel, but an INCI list never tells you the grade or viscosity, and the same name can mean a weightless fluid or a rich cushiony gel. Since we can't read the silicone's character from the label, we don't guess; scoring it would add noise, not signal.
Botanical extracts are left out for the same honesty reason. A "hydrating" green-tea or rice or aloe extract is usually present at a fraction of a percent, real marketing, marginal moisture effect. Counting them would let label-led "hydration" claims inflate the score, so a heavily-botanical K-beauty essence tends to read balanced here. That's the deliberately conservative, honest under-read: we'd rather score the structural ingredients we can actually weigh than the ones that mostly sell the bottle.
How to use this score for your skin type
Start from your skin, not the number. If you're oily, combination or acne-prone, aim at the light end and the lighter half of balanced, the alcohol-anchored gels, oil-control fluids and powder-set formulas that add little moisture and keep shine down through the day. If you're dry, mature or dealing with a flaky, tight winter barrier, head for hydrating and nourishing: glycerin and HA high in the list, panthenol and other humectants, ceramides and barrier lipids. And if your skin is normal or you're not sure, the broad balanced middle is the safe default, it's the biggest band by design, for exactly that reason.
Three honest caveats. First, this score is about how much moisture the ingredients add, not the optical finish, if you specifically want a flat, no-shine look, a hydrating formula can still deliver that, so pair this scale with how a product describes its finish rather than assuming hydrating means greasy. Second, it's not about weight or thickness either: a thick, occlusive lip balm can land low on moisture and still feel heavy, check the Heavy feel score for that. Third, season and climate shift the target: the balanced sunscreen that's perfect in a humid summer can feel thin in a dry winter, so it's normal to slide one notch more hydrating when the air does. There's no single right answer on this axis, just the one that matches the skin you're in today.

Does sunscreen hydrate your skin?

Why does this score use red and green if neither end is bad?
Purely for legibility. We tint light-feel factors red and hydrating factors green so you can tell the two poles apart at a glance. On this axis the colours mean 'which end', not 'good or bad', a red light-feel factor is exactly what oily skin wants. It's a spectrum, not a grade.
Why don't occlusives like petrolatum count toward the moisture score?
Because sealing water in isn't the same as adding it. Petrolatum, lanolin, mineral oil, beeswax and plant butters form a film that locks moisture in, but the thing they mostly change is how heavy and slick a product feels. We measure that on a separate axis, Heavy feel, and keep it out of this score so Moisture stays honest about genuine hydration, humectants and light nourishing lipids.
Why doesn't the score count dimethicone or plant extracts?
Because the ingredient list doesn't tell us enough about them. Dimethicone's feel depends entirely on its grade and viscosity, which INCI never lists, and botanical extracts are usually present at tiny, label-driven amounts. Scoring either would add noise, so we deliberately leave them out and weigh the structural humectants, lipids and powders we can actually read.
Which sunscreens sit in the 'balanced' middle?
Most of the catalog, by design, it's the largest band. These are formulas where hydrating and light-feel ingredients roughly cancel out, like Biore's UV Aqua Rich Glowy Moisturizer, where alcohol is offset by glycerin and hyaluronate. Balanced is the sensible default if your skin is normal or you're unsure of your type.
Can a sunscreen replace my moisturiser?
Sometimes. A formula anchored high in glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and ceramides, the kind we rate toward 'hydrating' or 'nourishing', genuinely hydrates and can double as your moisturiser. An alcohol-and-powder light formula won't; for dry skin it still needs a moisturiser underneath.
