What makes a sunscreen non-comedogenic

There is no legal definition of "non-comedogenic", so the claim on a label means little on its own. Our comedogenic score reads the formula directly: it looks for heavy comedogenic esters, oils and butters high in the ingredient list, and stacks of them, then scores how likely the formula is to clog pores.

Texture matters too. A light, fast-absorbing fluid is usually a safer bet for acne-prone skin than a rich cream, even when both avoid the worst offenders. Pair this filter with Lightweight or Matte if your skin runs oily.

Frequently asked questions

Does non-comedogenic mean it won't cause breakouts?

It lowers the odds, but skin is individual. Non-comedogenic means the formula avoids the ingredients most associated with clogged pores. Fungal acne is a separate problem with its own triggers, so check the Fungal-safe filter too if that is your concern.

How do you decide if a sunscreen is non-comedogenic?

Our rule-based score scans the ingredient list against a comedogenicity watchlist, weighted by how high each ingredient sits in the formula. A formula with heavy comedogenic oils near the top scores worse than one where they appear low or not at all.
